Staff Accountant

Position Summary
The Staff Accountant supports Thornwell’s Finance Department in maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles and internal controls. This position offers exposure to all aspects of nonprofit accounting and provides opportunities for professional development and advancement within the finance department.
Core Responsibilities
  1. Processes account receivable transactions, including donations, grants, and program billing, ensuring accuracy and timely recording.
  2. Performs monthly bank reconciliations for assigned accounts; all reconciliations are subject to review and approval by the Director of Finance.
  3. Reviews and supports payroll processing for accuracy and compliance.
  4. Assists with monthly financial reporting, journal entries, and audit preparation.
  5. Maintains confidentiality of financial and donor information in compliance with Thornwell policies.
  6. Supports departmental coordination with Mission Advancement for proper gift coding and reporting.
  7. Performs related duties as assigned in support of the Finance Department.
Working Conditions
This position follows a hybrid schedule: Monday through Friday, with four days in the office and one day working from home. Expectations include using office equipment, including computers, printers, and scanners. The role may involve extended periods of sitting and performing tasks that require sustained focus and attention to detail.
Qualifications
  • An associate's degree in accounting or business is required. Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred.
  • 1–3 years of accounting experience preferred, with nonprofit accounting experience a plus.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to internal control procedures.
Skills:
  1. Competency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  2. Good communication and organizational skills.
  3. High attention to detail.
  4. Willingness to function independently as well as in a team environment.
