About
Whitten Center is a residential facility operated by the South Carolina Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD), the Office of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (OIDD).  Its purpose is to assist the most fragile individuals with disabilities and their families in meeting needs, pursuing possibilities, and achieving life goals by: 1) addressing individual needs, 2) encouraging choice, 3) promoting growth in skills and abilities, and 4) facilitating social interaction and community involvement.  This is done in a restrictive setting with a wide range of services that encourage personal independence balanced with the need to provide a safe, secure, and supportive environment.  Whitten Center provides 24-hour residential care, supervision, treatment to BHDD-OIDD's most fragile individuals, those individuals with more complex and severe disabilities. Center care is generally recommended only when all other appropriate community services are not available.
